How Substance Abuse Contributes to Suicide Risk Substance abuse commonly co-occurs with several mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. People with mental illness are more likely to use alcohol or other drugs, and some of them use the substances to self-medicate symptoms of their mental illness.
Common Risk Factors for Suicide & Substance Abuse Substance abuse and suicide share numerous risk factors. Most of the time, a single risk factor doesn’t cause suicidal thoughts. Experiencing multiple risk factors increases a person’s risk of developing depression, using substances of abuse, contemplating suicide or experiencing a combination of any of those mental health disorders.
Determining When Someone Is at Risk for Suicide People contemplating suicide don’t always tell others. They might beat around the bush, or they may mention it sarcastically. If someone who is addicted to alcohol or other drugs appears to be making jokes about ending their life, they may not be joking. In addition to talking about suicide, warning signs that someone is considering making a suicide attempt include:
Extreme mood swings
Cutting off friends or family
Increasing substance abuse
Feeling like a burden to others
Feeling trapped
Feeling hopeless
Looking for ways to commit suicide

On Wednesday, August 1, the National Suicide Hotline Improvement Act - as amended by the House of Representatives - passed through the Senate by unanimous consent to be signed by the President of the United States into law!
Introduced in May of 2017, this important legislation will initiate a federal study on the effectiveness of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK) and the feasibility of determining three-digit phone number for a national suicide prevention and mental health crisis hotline system. Thank you to our Field Advocates that urged their Representatives and Senators to pass this important legislation. Increasing access to suicide prevention crisis resources will save lives.

WordZ-RLIF Suicide Prevention Intervention Program (WSPIP) for Youth (*Patent Pending)
“Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Mark 12:31 According to the New Testament, loving thy neighbor as thyself is the second commandment in God’s word; The first being to love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, soul, mind, and strength.
GRG is proud to launch this new branch of services to our ministry partners. The WordZ-RLIF Suicide Prevention Intervention Program for youth ministries uses the above principles as a standard of care for churches to aid its youth membership in obtaining mental, psychological, and physical assistance when needed. We assist church leaders in identifying potential signs of Emotional Distress or Trauma in its membership base, focusing in particular on youth groups of all ages.
One of the primary focus areas of GRG is Teen Suicide. We provide churches with training in this area and help coordinate the collaboration of Local and National Faith-Based churches with Community organizations on Suicide Prevention. This is done through workshops, webinars, and other offerings with churches to provide awareness and viable tools for its Leadership base.
Our WordZ-RLIF philosophy is simple: Giving Love – Choosing Life.
GRG Education Group, Inc. will be accepting applications for 2020 “RIZE AAO" scholarships later on this year. Please stay tuned for more information...
